I am an Atlanta area native, growing up in Paulding County. As the son of a butcher, I was the first in my family to graduate from college.
After graduating high school in 1984 I joined the US Army at 17. At 22 I became a student at Kennesaw State University and graduated in 1993 with and a BBA in Accounting (3.3 gpa).
I took a position with a local mortgage firm expecting a career as an accountant. However, in the winter of 1995 / 96, as my employer went out of business, I was offered a position as office manager with a small, local grading / utility contractor. That position quickly materialized into 'estimator & project manager'.
I jumped at the opportunity and discovered I enjoyed the field of sitework. With no formal training for estimating or PM responsibilities, I had to learn very quickly. My accounting background turned out to be very useful while picking up as much as I could along the way.
My first two years (1996-97) there was no senior estimator/project manager to work under or learn from. Looking back, I think I did okay. However, I knew I would not get the experience and education to be a skilled estimator unless I moved on to a larger, more establshed company.
In 1998 I was took a position with Butch Thompson Enterprises (BTE). A major, reputable sitework contractor in the Atlanta area. It was here I received my first real training under the guidance of good, seasoned estimators.
In 2000 I took a position with A.L. Grading Contractors in Suwanee, GA. A large 4th generation grading / utility contractor owned and operated by the Wood family. ALGC performed light & heavy civil sitework. I refined and broadened my knowledge and experience base by working with some of the best people in the business. When I left in 2004 I was Sr. Estimator & Project Manager.
I had sucessfully been preparing detailed cost and quantity estimates for sitework bids, as a contractor and managing sitework projects ranging from under $50,000 to over $5,000,000 since 1996. In 2004 I was ready to open Division 2 Estimating. I established Division 2 Estimating to take sitework estimating to a new level. To redefine the way the industry thinks about sitework estimating.
When I prepare your estimate I not only quantify a set of drawings but can draw upon years of experience as an Estimator / PM / Contractor to anticipate actual requirements of the field that may not be shown on the drawings.
