Born in 1966. I am an Atlanta area native, growing up in Paulding County. The son of a butcher, I was the first in my family to graduate from college.
After graduating from high school I joined the US Army at 17 in the summer of 1984. After 4 years I returned home and entered Kennesaw State University (then KSC).
In 1993 I graduated from KSC with a 3.3 GPA and a BBA in Accounting. Upon graduation I took a position with a local mortgage firm expecting to have a long and successful career as an accountant. However in 1995 as my employer went out of business I was offered a position with a small local grading / utility contractor. A position as office manager quickly materialized into an estimator & project manager in training role.
I jumped into the new role with both feet and discovered I thoroughly enjoyed the field of sitework. Despite having no formal training for my estimating and PM responsibilities, I learned very quickly. I relied on my accounting background and general common sense while picking up as much as I could along the way.
My first two years in the business (1996-97) I was on my own as their was no senior estimator to work under nor even a peer from whom I could gleen knowledge. Looking back, given my situation I was essentially 'thrown' into, I didn't do half bad. However I knew, I would never get the experience and education needed to be a good, skilled estimator unless I moved on to a larger, more stable company.
In 1998 I was able to take a position with Butch Thompson Enterprises (BTE) as their new junior estimator. A major sitework contractor in the Atlanta area. It was here I received my first real training under the guidance of good, seasoned estimators like Scott Beaumont. In addition to grading and utilities, BTE is an asphalt contractor, so I was exposed to that facet of sitework as well. All my memories of BTE were good.
In 2000 I took a position with A.L. Grading Contractors in Suwanee, GA. A large 4th generation family owned grading / utilty contractor owned and operated by the Wood family. Until 2004 I was Sr. Estimator & Project Manager. I refined, honed and broadened my knowledge and experience base by working with some of the best people in the business.
I have sucessfully been preparing detailed cost and quantity estimates for sitework bids, as a contractor and managing sitework projects ranging from under $50,000 to over $5,000,000 since 1996. In 2004 I was ready to open Division 2 Estimating, LLC. I established Division 2 Estimating, LLC to take sitework estimating, as a service, to a new level. When I prepare your estimate I not only look at a set of plans but can draw upon many years of experience as a contractor to anticipate actual requirements of the field that may not be shown on the drawings.
